I love the Olympics. I haven’t had time to post about it much this year, but I do. Just love it, them? The whole thing. I’m one of those people who complain about all those little vignettes about the athletes in between the action and then end up crying at the stories anyway. I’m a sucker for that kind of thing.
I’ve written stories about Olympic athletes and am even editing an anthology due out next month with an Olympic theme. So you’ll be seeing more about Olympics from me over the next month or so.
Today I’m very excited because Team USA chose Mariel Zagunis as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony. She’s a female fencer, just 27, but already in her third Games. She’s won gold the last two times in saber. She’s awesome and I’m just thrilled she’s been chosen. (Some of my readers know I love fencing… that’s why this is particularly exciting.)
Who else can’t wait for the Games to get underway? Some athletes are already competing, like the soccer teams. They have so many rounds and need rest between, so they need an early start. I don’t watch TV much but you can bet I’ll be tuning into the opening ceremony. And I’ll probably be crying as the announcers tell stories of how athletes from tiny countries made their way, or how a kid who was nearly killed in a car wreck is now a marathon runner.
What’s your favorite thing about the Games? Least favorite? Everyone who comments will be entered to win a copy of GOING FOR GOLD when it’s published by MLR Press next month!
