What happens when business turns to pleasure?

Alec Compton’s dream job at a Wall Street investment firm is on the line if he can’t close a make-or-break takeover deal by the end of the year.

The buyer is none other than world-renowned billionaire and corporate raider Brant Linton, recently named one of the hottest and most eligible gay businessmen. Electricity crackles at their first meeting, and Alec’s thoughts drift far from business, despite his distaste for Brant’s business practices.

When Brant takes off early to spend Christmas with his sister’s family on the exclusive French Polynesian island of Taha’a, Alec has no choice but to follow if he wants to get Brant to sign on the dotted line. But Brant’s sister has forbidden him from conducting business during the holidays and Alec must masquerade as Brant’s boyfriend lest she find out what they’re really up to.

Then business turns into pleasure, but neither Brant nor Alec know whether the other is there for the deal, or for something more personal in EM Lynley’s sizzling holiday novella A Christmas Bonus.

Jeremy Linden’s a PhD student researching an HIV vaccine. He’s always short of money, and when biotech startup PharmaTek reduces funding for his fellowship, he’s tempted to take a job at a men’s dining club as a serving boy. The uniforms are skimpy, and he’s expected to remove an item of clothing after each course. He can handle that, but he soon discovers there’s more on the menu here than fine cuisine. How far will he go to pay his tuition, and will money get in the way when he realizes he’s interested in more from one of his gentlemen?

Brice Martin is an attorney for a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. When he’s asked to take a client to the infamous Dinner Club, he finds himself unexpectedly turned on by the atmosphere and especially by his server, Remy. He senses there’s more to the sexy young man than meets the eye. The paradox fascinates him, and he can’t get enough of Remy.

Their relationship quickly extends beyond the club and sex. But the trust and affection they’ve worked to achieve may crumble when Jeremy discovers Brice’s VC firm is the one that pulled the plug on PharmaTek – and Jeremy’s research grant.

Back online…. but still cleaning up http://www.emlynley.com/blog/back-online-but-still-cleaning-up/ http://www.emlynley.com/blog/back-online-but-still-cleaning-up/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 18:01:11 +0000 http://www.emlynley.com/blog/?p=5401

It happened again!! Unfortunately my websites were hacked last month and I’m just getting everything back online after switching web hosts.

Some of the most recent content was lost in the changeover and I’ll be adding it back as time allows.

If you haven’t been following me on Facebook, you may not know that I went back to college full time for a paralegal certificate in September 2015 and I put writing on hold until I finished.  But now I am getting back to writing and being part of the gay romance community. Please bear with me as I start to ramp things up again.

Thanks for stopping by!

The good news is that the free stories downloads are now working again, so stop by and read some long excerpts and full chapters.

Thanks for your patience.

Camels, Horses and One Amazing Bull #mmromance @dreamspinners http://www.emlynley.com/blog/camels-and-bulls/ http://www.emlynley.com/blog/camels-and-bulls/#respond Sat, 04 Jun 2016 14:01:30 +0000 http://www.emlynley.com/blog/?p=5411 A couple of years ago, Brandilyn Carpenter asked me for my favorite places in the world. I can’t find the list right now (that would have been a miracle!) but I do know that you’d find Jaisalmer, India in one of the top spots.

jaisalmer view from top

I’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively around the world and even luckier to have been able to set stories in many of my favorite places so I can share the joys (and the occasional horror) of my own experiences.

So I knew that eventually I’d set a story in one of the most amazing places I’ve even been: Jaisalmer. It’s really like a golden city floating above the desert near the border of India and Pakistan. It’s an old  fortress, with thick walls not unlike those you’d find surrounding a medieval European castle. Narrow walkways wind up to the top of the city past the old palaces that the Rajasthani royalty once occupied.

And like many cities in India there are plenty of cattle wandering around. I had  my own intimate encounter with one up near the top of the Jaisalmer fort when I got caught in a narrow alley with a horned devil who didn’t want to share the road. I don’t have a scar, but lets just say that those horns are kinda sharp. It was one of those experiences that brought home that I was in INDIA!!

I ended up spending about four months traveling around India and though I saw many amazing and incredible places, Jaisalmer remains among my favorite experiences. I hope you’ll feel that you’ve made the journey when you read Holy Cow!

American med student Duncan Stirling is traveling around India with his two best friends, who have just married. Their last stop is the magical city of Jaisalmer, a fort in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. He feels like a third wheel on their honeymoon, though the three friends had the trip planned for years, to celebrate finishing medical school and have a last adventure before they start their residencies back in the States.

Akash Nandi is an Indian man from a wealthy and well-known family. At least that’s how he appears. He hides the truth that his family is descended from Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, and they’ve guarded sacred places for millennia. Being gay and immortal is tough, especially when his family’s expectations make finding the right mate impossible. As his grandmother, the family matriarch, nears death, a struggle for power puts Akash and his new crush, the charming American Duncan, in harm’s way.

Delectable NEW Release: “12 Courses” & Exclusive Recipe #mmromance @dreamspinners – http://www.emlynley.com/blog/delectable-exclusive-12courses/ http://www.emlynley.com/blog/delectable-exclusive-12courses/#respond Mon, 28 Dec 2015 18:48:43 +0000 http://www.emlynley.com/blog/?p=5395 12 Courses, the sixth book in the Delectable Series is officially here!

12CoursesFS300I can’t believe it. Six books. Actually more than that, when you count the missing scenes and freebies along the way. Working on this series has been nothing short of a joy for me, a real dream-come-true to combine my passions into one project.

I love cooking. Not just cooking, but trying new things, but challenging myself in the kitchen. Except for a few cooking classes here and there, I’m mostly self-taught, through trial, error and a lot of Food TV episodes.

Though some of the recipes my characters make in Delectable books are elaborate, I’ve also shown how easy it is to make something incredible easily. In fact, most chefs will tell you that they have the most fun when they combine a few prime ingredients in a simple technique to quickly create something spectacular.

And that’s what Blake’s Lobster Grilled Cheese is all about. I didn’t include this recipe in the book, though the scene where Blake cooks for Thom is a turning point in their relationship. You’ll have to read it to see why!

Here’s Blake’s recipe.

Blake Warner’s Operatic Lobster Grilled Cheese

Servings: Serves 2

Ingredients

• 4 slices of thick sliced country white or sourdough bread
• 4-6 ounces chunked fresh lobster meat (depending on availability and budget!)*
• 2 thick slices aged Gruyere cheese**
• 2 thick slices Baby Swiss
• Unsalted butter (also called sweet butter)

Directions

  1. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Slather butter on two slices of bread, then place buttered sides down in the skillet. Lay down half the Gruyere, then lobster on each. Top with Baby Swiss.
  3. Butter the remaining slices of bread while the first two cook.
  4. When the bottom is beautifully golden brown and cheese has melted, press the remaining slices of bread (butter side UP) onto the melty Swiss cheese. Carefully flip each sandwich over with a spatula and continue to cook until the bottom is browned to your taste.
  5. Let it cool for a moment—if you can restrain yourself—then enjoy.
Serve with a nice sparkling wine like Prosecco or Champagne if your budge allows.

*You can buy lobster meat at a fish market or some high-end grocery stores. If you can’t find it locally, substitute frozen lobster meat, also available at better grocery stores. If you decided to buy and steam your own whole lobster or claws, check with the fishmonger about how much you will need to yield 4-6 ounces of meat.

**Spring for the Aged Gruyere, which has a distinctive nutty flavor that’s very different from the unaged Gruyere. Ask for a taste of each at the cheese counter to compare and you’ll quickly see why Blake prefers Aged Gruyere hands down.

All About the Book

Thom Kennedy Leyton returns to San Francisco to take up the reins of Graze, one of the city’s best restaurants, years after he lost his job when his innovative new set of recipes was stolen. Thom’s loss of self-esteem eventually caused his boyfriend, Blake Warner, to end their relationship, sending Thom into a deep depression.
Now, cured of fifty excess pounds and any attraction to Blake, Thom’s back in town. Blake catches him off guard when he visits Graze several days in a row, and Thom lets himself get caught up in Blake’s allure, despite knowing better. Thom juggles a renewed relationship with Blake, a Christmas visit from his parents, and an important holiday menu based on a Twelve Days of Christmas theme.
When an old acquaintance reveals that Blake knows more about the theft of the recipes than he lets on, Thom doesn’t know whom to trust. But the truth isn’t quite that simple, and Thom won’t be able to decide if Blake deserves a place in his life until he learns exactly what happened years ago.

My Main Inspiration

I love to cook. If you’ve met me, you probably also know I love to eat. I have food and cooking scenes in all of my books, so it was inevitable I would write a series featuring chefs and winemakers, and other men in the restaurant world.

For this sixth installment in the Delectable Series, I needed to come up with some familiar, yet completely different. Another story about another chef just wasn’t going to do it for me or for fans of the series.

I decided to set myself a challenge: a new chef trying to convince his bosses to take a big chance on a vegan Twelve Nights of Christmas menu. Not only is Thom Kennedy trying to earn his way back to the top, but he’s chosen an incredibly tricky and risky way of doing it.

Thom actually had it easy. I was the one struggling to create a menu as elaborate as Thom needed. Not being a chef myself, coming up with a dozen unique vegan dishes worthy of a holiday special event taxed my brain more than anything I’ve written. I probably spent more time creating the menu than writing the story.

I did not consult with any professional chefs, so my imaginary Twelve Courses may not even work in actuality. That’s why I haven’t included any recipes this time around, though I will be sharing Blake’s Lobster Grilled Cheese Menu on my blog for release day.

How to Revise Your #NaNo Masterpiece #amwriting (sign ups now closed) http://www.emlynley.com/blog/revise-masterpiece-amwriting/ http://www.emlynley.com/blog/revise-masterpiece-amwriting/#respond Tue, 15 Dec 2015 19:46:46 +0000 http://www.emlynley.com/blog/?p=5366 Right now you’re thinking one (or both) of two things:

  1. Hang on, if it’s such a masterpiece, why would you need to revise it?
  2. If I have to revise it, why would you call it a masterpiece?

Well, dudes, both are true.

unpolished diamondI’ll start with #2 first, just to make sure you’re paying attention.

If you finished a novel, or even if you got 50,000 words down during November, you’ve created something amazing. For some of you it was your first novel or first finished writing piece. So whatever you accomplished is a masterpiece.

Now for #1

Think of diamonds. Most first draft novels are like a lump of sparkly gray rock, and it needs some major cutting to be ready to show the world. Some manuscripts, especially for experienced writers, just need a little polish.

But chances are your book needs some major renovations.

That’s the difference between editing and revising. (Even if you’ve already read my post about that, go back and read it again. The distinctions are significant and make the difference between a good book and a great book.

I used to absolutely detest, abhor, loathe, despise (fill in thesaurus gem of your own) rewriting and revising. I’d put some cosmetic touches, get rid of half the “thats” and call it done. But the more I write, the more I have discovered that it takes 2-3 passes on a novel before you can add in all the layers and nuance, and develop the subplots or tweak them so they better support the theme and main plot line. Whenever I have taken the additional step for a thoughtful rewrite/revision, I have made the book infinitely better.

Even if you spent a long time planning (and I guarantee most of you did not….) you will benefit from putting in some more work before you toss this puppy out onto Kindle.

So it should come as no surprise that even a solid NaNo effort can benefit from some thoughtful revision of the structural elements like character, theme, etc.

HTRYN-FLAT-Course-Advert-300So, how do you go about this?

Give yourself and your writing career a holiday gift!

In the past I have taught some revision seminars, but this year I have too many irons in the fire. In fact, I didn’t even participate in NaNo, which was so painful, since I’ve been an enthusiastic supporter (and winner!) for years. In fact NaNo has been a huge inspiration for me every year, even after I became a full-time writer.

If you’ve read more than a couple of my posts about planning and writing a novel or you used my book How to Be a NaNoWriMo Winner, it will be no surprise that Holly Lisle has been a huge influence on my writing. She’s also a goddess when it comes to revision. She teaches an amazing in-depth online class (How to Revise Your Novel) that forces you to pick apart your book (yes, it can feel like chopping up the baby), but the dissection and analysis will make the book a much better book.

“When Even The Pros Crash And Burn While Rewriting Their Books,
How Are YOU Supposed To
Get Revision Right?”

You will feel like a real writer as you go through the lessons. I know you already wrote a novel, so what do I mean? You’ll look at your story at so many more levels than you would otherwise. Once you learn these techniques, you will start to apply them to writing, so you have less to do to revise a future piece.

HollysWritingClasses-2015-Logo-200x200-FLATSo, the shortcut to revising is to take Holly’s wonderful class rather than trying to do it yourself, or picking apart beta reader comments. You will never get better advice about rewriting a story than when you apply tried-and-true techniques to what you already know you want to achieve in a story. Plus you will get advice and support from other people in the class on whether you’re on the right track. You’ll also get feedback from Holly, which is priceless!

For full disclosure, I am one of Holly’s affiliate partners. But that’s only because I have taken her classes in the past and can honestly recommend her as a teacher and can offer genuine raves on her techniques.

In fact, this time around I’m going to join in again and work on a book that’s been gathering dust, unloved and untouched in a corner. By the end of the class I’ll have a real masterpiece, and so will you!

Find out all the good stuff from Holly about what she’ll be teaching and how to SIGN UP!

Also, feel free to ask me questions along the way as well!

If you don’t decide to take the course, I highly recommend any of her other courses or books. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn. If you put even one or two techniques into each of your future projects, you’ll find your writing (and your reviews and sales) improving with every new release.

This is going to be so much FUN.

So Here’s Holly’s GuaranteeSatisfaction Guaranteed

  • Every single lesson of this course will be worth your time, will help you reach your writing goals, and will get you closer to writing the books you want to write, rather than the books you just end up with.
  • You will have every resource you need to understand what’s going on, and to understand what you need to do each step of the way.
  • If at any point during the first four months of the course, you are dissatisfied with what you’re learning, contact Holly at Student Support (the HELP DESK on every page of your classroom) and let her know you want to quit, and tell her you want a refund on your last lesson. If you had more lessons due that month, she’ll include a pro rata refund for the lessons you didn’t receive that month as well. (Don’t worry. Every student has direct access to Holly. No intermediaries. No run-around.)
  • She’ll give you your lesson refund, no questions asked, and cancel your course immediately so you won’t be charged again.
  • You’ll have one full week to decide on any lesson you receive, right up to the day and time your next lesson appears in your classroom.

Marine helicopter pilot Captain Jake Woodley struggles after receiving the Medal of Honor for a mission where he didn’t bring every man back alive. Being called a hero and having his photo plastered across the news makes him hate himself more. He despises his cushy job flying with the Marine One squadron, carrying the president and other officials, when he’d rather risk something, even death. He gets his wish when he’s ordered to fly a series of classified trips.

Matt “Beau” Beaumont has been relegated to covering the fashion beat after getting downsized from a hard-news position. But an unexpected invitation to a White House dinner might be the boost his career needs. Offering a hot Marine an after-dinner blowjob wasn’t on Beau’s agenda, but when Jake takes him up on the proposition, some phenomenal casual sex soon blossoms into a relationship both of them crave.

When Beau’s extracurricular research uncovers defense department funding anomalies, he soon discovers the trouble goes higher than he imagined. Just as events start to make sense, the investigation puts Beau and Jake in deadly danger. It takes a daring play by Jake—risking everything he loves—to uncover the truth.

I wasn’t actually going to enter any books in the Rainbow Awards this year, but I decided to give it a go, because the entry fees were going to charity. All I really had to lose was another layer off my already-battered ego. I learned years ago that sometimes it’s safer to not ask for other people’s opinions.

As it happens, I think two of my recent releases are some of the best writing I’ve ever done. (Yes,  practice does help, though when it comes to writing, it certainly doesn’t make perfect.) And I also had my biggest selling book ever this year, and a few people twisted various parts of my anatomy, so I caved and entered.

Color me gobsmacked to learn that I had three books with Honorable Mentions for their category, three finalists and all three were Runners Up. I’m just thrilled to death that the judges also seemed to think these books are among my best.

Now there’s a prize for you too, because Dreamspinner Press has put all the Rainbow Award winners and runners up on sale at 30% off.   You can find buy links below.

What do you think?

Do you eat vegan or vegetarian food? Do you actively avoid it?

Get Dirty Again!

This one has been a runaway best seller, and the audio version is even more fun!

I fell in love with the narrator’s audition tape, and you’ll adore him too!

Dirty Dining AudiobookListen to the sample
